Joe Sloan, a 16-year-old Judge Memorial High School junior, won the top prize of $1,000 for the video he entered into the Utah Highway Safety Office's "Drive Aware. Ride Aware." competition. The one minute video took less than four hours to film and features Sloan reciting statistics that highlight the need for such safety awareness. You can watch the video here.

Utah Highway Patrol Col. Daniel Fuhr was on hand for the awards ceremony and confirmed that more safety education is needed. He noted that seven people died in motorcycle accidents on Utah roadways between August 1st and August 9th. Citing the ages of each (46 to 63), he also confirmed that the common perception that most motorcycle deaths are reckless youths is a myth. Finally, he stressed that safety messages such as those produced by Sloan are not just for motorcyclists; all drivers need to be safety aware and those in four wheel vehicles need to be on the lookout for those on two wheel vehicles.
