Toward the end of last year, the speed limit on two stretches of Interstate 15 in southern Utah was raised from 75 m.p.h. to 80 m.p.h. The stretches total about 18 miles and run between Kanosh and Filmore, and Scipio and Mills. According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the increase resulted in drivers going an average of 2 to 3 m.p.h. faster and fewer speeding violations, but no increase in accidents to date.

These statistics are good news to be sure. The lack of an in cease accidents, however, does not mean that drivers should not be constantly vigilant while driving at the higher speeds. Of course, texting while driving is illegal in Utah so drivers should never be distracted in that way. Also, guard against other forms of distracted driving and pay close attention to the onset of drowsiness which is the cause of way too many accidents. Finally, regardless of the speed limit, always drive at speeds that are safe for the conditions. The law requires it and so does common sense.
